According to the website the Morpheous Bondage Extravaganza is “the world’s largest, single night rope bondage exhibit”. It has been going strong for nine years, and this year it will take place Toronto San Francisco, Orlando and our hometown of Baltimore. If you haven’t heard us announce it on twitter, Mr Blk and Ms Pomegranate were lucky enough to be chosen as performers for the Baltimore show. It’s twelve hours of nonstop rope performances, with viewers from all areas of the kink world coming to witness. A live video feed of the 12 hour event is broadcast free online at MBEworldwide.com. But who is Morpheous and why is he hosting a rope event like this?
Lord Morpheous (as he known) is a sex educator/author, photographer and kink consultant for all media, based in Toronto, Canada. His books How To Be Kinky: A Beginner’s Guide to BDSM, How To Be Kinkier: More Adventures in Adult Playtime and Bondage Basics: Naughty Knots and Risque Restraints You Need To Know are all available on Amazon.
He sat down with us to talk about the event and answer some questions about the event and his awesome works.
Black Pomegranate: You’ve authored three successful books about rope bondage and kink respectively. Why do you think there is currently so much interest in kink and BDSM?
Lord Morpheous: I think that the current media circus around things like Fifty Shades of Grey and TV shows like Masters of Sex has certainly helped, but my books were selling well even before Fifty Shades became such a phenomenon! I think everyone has a kink, whether that’s being bound in leather and rope or having gang-bangs or simply having your partner talk dirty to you, and it’s great to be able to help people to explore that. BDSM is particularly fascinating because I think it allows you to subvert the “usual” power structures in a myriad of different ways. People often think of BDSM in sub/dom terms but there’s so much more than that. You can have slave/Master dynamics that are totally non-sexual, you can have switch scenarios, you can have riggers worshiping their bound up rope bunnies; the possibilities are endless. There aren’t many other arenas in which you have that sort of sexual freedom, and I think that’s what’s quite so interesting about kink and BDSM.
I’m incredibly proud that my books have helped people to understand that no matter what you’re into, what’s important is that you explore that in a safe, sane and consensual way.
Black Pomegranate: Something else to be proud of is The Morpheous Bondage Extravaganza. This event has grown from a single storefront event in Toronto to become the world’s largest showcase of bondage performances. Did you anticipate that MBE would become an international event when you first began?
Lord Morpheous: I don’t think I ever could have anticipated that it would become so huge – and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to do it alone! I’ve had a great team over the years, as well as some fantastic performers and audiences, and it’s due to the passion and dedication of everyone that the show has gotten so huge. It was (and still is) a labor of love really, driven by our desire to show the beauty and sensuality of artistic and erotic rope bondage. It’s a testament to the ability of the performance and the beauty of rope bondage that it’s found such a huge worldwide audience and that it grows bigger every year. When we started as a part of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche, I think people would come in a very curious fashion, usually after a few drinks to see what it was all about, and they were stunned by what they saw. I’m still trying to stun people nine years later!
Black Pomegranate: I agree that events like the Extravaganza certainly stun people, but it also may lead them to try out activities in kink. If you had one bit of advice for someone completely new to kink and rope bondage, what would it be?
Lord Morpheous: Have an open mind, and remember safety at all times. There are so many resources available nowadays, and in my books I try to tap into people’s imaginations rather than telling them everything there is to know and to do. Kink is limitless, and you can explore your sexuality on any budget, in any place, and in any way that you’d like. Learn the basic building blocks and then let your imagination run wild. And remember: Safe, sane and consensual.
Black Pomegranate: We agree with all of that. OK, that all sounds awesome, but we can’t interview you and not get some rope knowledge from you. So, tell us, what do you hope viewers of MBE learn about rope bondage, specifically?
Lord Morpheous: I hope they learn that it’s an incredibly wide and far-ranging practice, and that every single rigger brings their own personal flair to the art! To me, a rigger’s ties are as personal as their handwriting; there are two classic rope bondage styles (shibari and kinbaku), but every rope bondage aficionado ties in a very different way, and many riggers like me bring elements of both styles together with a personal, modern twist. It’s like painting; we might all be using the same colors, but we’re making different works of art.
Black Pomegranate: And if I got to view this art at each of Rope Extravaganzas, what is the one thing I will see/feel at every location?
Lord Morpheous: You’ll feel aroused, enticed, excited, curious, scintillated, fascinated, inspired and more!
